Statement
In my art, I like to express mental and spiritual states. Thoughts, feelings, and Judeo-Christian values inspire me. While the work has meaning to me, often suggested by the title based on experience, mindfulness, and imagination, the meaning is open to interpretation by the viewer.
When painting, I use elements of abstract art to create the work. I used to rarely use shapes. With my photography, I make some abstract work but more often rely on recognizable objects. In some projects, objects represent the abstract. I use them as symbols. With words about the work, I share my intended interpretation. My drawing, including representational, initiates some abstract work.
I feel that expressing is therapeutic to me and perhaps the viewer, whether the work is light or dark, calm or dynamic, or both. Some work brings peace of mind; some underscores mystery or heightens curiosity, raising more questions than answers.
Art Background
My art experience is mostly self-taught.
I practiced drawing and watercolors at St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, DE. In my gap year in Washington, DC, I painted in a course at Corcoran School of the Arts & Design. That motivated independent practice. I visited museums and galleries.
In Austin, TX, I worked on art at home and subscribed to art literature. At The University of Texas, I accessed the libraries, took art history courses, and painted in a studio course for non-art majors.
After earning my liberal arts degree, I began showing work at a local art organization and sold several paintings and photographs for use in Marriott and Hilton brand hotels in Tennessee and Texas.
Between 2011 and 2016 I trained in communication art. I took portfolio courses at a creative school located at GSD&M, a national advertising agency; I earned a master's degree in advertising at UT-Austin; and I attended The Creative Circus full-time for nine months in Atlanta, GA. I left to focus on fine art.
Since moving to Boston in 2020, I have improved my art practice at the Museum of Fine Arts, Harvard Extension School (visual arts graduate certificate), and Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
